Valentine’s Day will soon be upon us again, a day when most of us think of giving gifts of wine, chocolates, flowers, massages and jewellery. But there are some ‘special’ people out there who had other ideas. Here a few more ‘interesting’ love related patents.

US6735568 — Method and system for identifying people who are likely to have a successful relationship; For those of you yet to find that special someone, eHarmony are here to help. The masterminds behind one of the most successful internet dating sites patented a process for matching people in a way that they had the best chance forming a lasting relationship. Critics have argued that it’s just a mathematical method and should not have been patented, even so, love a maths still go together — to quote the late great Dana Dawson: “1 and 1 is 2, 2 is me and you, 2 plus 1 is 3, 3 is family!

US20090136162 fig. 1

US20090136162 “Gift Bag For Maintaining an Emotional Connection or Conveying a Show of Support”; Valentine’s Day is a great day to rekindle the fire in a relationship. But if you want keep that flame burning all year round, what better way than to tell your beloved how you feel every single day! Douglas D. Lazarus filed a patent application for a “Gift Bag for Maintaining an Emotional Connection or Conventional Support”, which contains 365 messages.

Patent images never do plants justice; we think this is what they would really look like

USPP15471 P3 “Liriope muscari plant named ‘Love Potion №13’”; now before you go out looking for these pretty purple flowers to boil up with eye of newt and wing of bat so you can add a few drops to your celebrity crush’s coffee, We have to tell you that the title comes from the inventors name: ‘Ron Love’, and not from any magical effects. We’d suggest simply giving a bunch in a vase.

US20070078663Method and Instrument for Proposing Marriage to an Individual”; what better way to say, “I love you” than with the gift of patent application. Certainly putting himself in the running for Best (or only) Patent-Related Marriage Proposal in History is Ryan Thomas Grace of Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. Grace, a registered practitioner, decided to write up one of the most romantic patent applications ever. Seriously, give it a read, it’s better than a Mills and Boon! Ellie, we hope you said yes, and we expect to see some divisional filings in 9 months!

And finally, our personal favourite…

US D491,338 “Heart shaped pepperoni slice”; They say the way to a man’s hearth is through is stomach, so I guess that explains what William C. Arbaugh II was thinking. This romantic take on the classic pizza topping is sure to make many a heart flutter, right before it begins to seize up after all that salt!

The patent images don’t do the concept justice, but even with a boring grey shape, just the idea of pepperoni is enough to make our mouths water.

So much so, that we decided to make our own, what do you think?

I’m off to dig in before it’s all gone.

Until next time, ciao, and from al of us here at Patently: Happy Valentine’s Day!
